ROIP stands for „Reviving Old Imari Porcelain“ and was initiated by Machiko Hoshina in 2015.

The project originated from a tea ceremony hosted by Machiko Hoshina in autumn 2015 at the Austrian Ambassador’s residence in Tokyo, held in honour of the Piatti family, owners of Loosdorf Castle, during their first visit to Japan. There, the Piattis mentioned a collection of inherited shards — some of Japanese origin — displayed at the castle. This sparked a research and restoration project that scientifically investigates the porcelain’s history and brings it to wider audiences through exhibitions in both Japan and Austria. In the 2019 anniversary year of 150 years of Japanese-Austrian friendship, the project was recognised by the Austrian Cultural Forum in Tokyo. The shards are regarded as a symbol of peace and friendship between the two nations.
